How we build them

SmartAppliances was begun by Daily Data to promote our devices which are based on Open Source software.

We decided to take the idea of openness one step further, however, and provide the specifications of how we build these devices, including the brand names and where we purchase the off-the-shelf hardware we use. If you buy one of our appliances, we feel you should know exactly what you are getting.

Why should you buy a router from us instead of building it yourself? For the same reason you might choose to take your car to a mechanic to get the oil changed instead of doing it yourself. You want efficiency, knowledge and support. Changing the oil in your car requires you to have knowledge you may not possess. To do the job you need to take time away from your busy schedule to get under your car, drain the oil, put in the new oil, get the old filter off and seal the new one correctly. You probably will have to purchase a torque wrench and you will have to find a way to correctly dispose of the old oil. While you’re doing all this, you may not have time to take a look at the air filter to see if it needs to be replaced. Will you know to check the battery while you’re working?

Trusting an expert to handle this job for you gives you peace of mind. You know it’s been done correctly, and that your car will run smoothly. You’ve spent a little more money, but the mechanic is faster and more efficient. He has all the equipment to complete the job correctly.  Plus, he has the knowledge and the experience to notice if something else is wrong under the hood. You’re paying for more than just the job at hand. You’re buying the experience and service provided by an expert.

The same is true when you hire us to build your router.

Purchasing from SmartAppliances makes sense if your time is better spent pursuing your business specialties than learning how to build an appliance. You can rest assured that, with us, you are getting expert attention to detail and efficient, quality workmanship.

Just like some people love working on cars, and visit a mechanic as their “professional adviser,” some of you will want to “get your hands dirty” and build your own appliances. For you, we provide step-by-step instructions on how to do so below.

Don’t forget: These products are made possible due to the unselfish work of many people. If you use these Open Source products, we encourage you to repay their creators by donating time, money, or resources to the appropriate project if possible.
